Director General of Maharashtra Police SS Virk being greeted by officials as he retired from service after the Central Administrative Tribunal (CAT) refused to grant him two years extension on his tenure in Mumbai on Saturday,31 October 2009. Virk, appointed DGP in March this year, succeeded A N Roy whose appointment was set aside by the Bombay High Court in February on the ground that the selection process was "arbitrary", violative of constitutional principle of equality and the Supreme Court"s guidelines. Virk served as a DGP in two states — Punjab and Maharashtra.
