A red alert was sounded in Upper Assam"s Lakhimpur district as an embankment was washed away by the mighty Brahmaputra River inundating a large number of villages, official sources said on Thursday. About 300 villages with a population of more than 14,000 were affected with the East Dhakuakhana, Matmore, Kherkota, Dangdhara, Dimoruguri, Kekuri and Dholpeta gaon panchayats inundated by flood water in Assam. As heavy rains lashes the upper reaches of the Brahmaputra and possibility of further rise in water level the Lakhimpur district administration sounded the red alert and the BSF personnel deployed for rescue operation.
